Asakusa Hagoita-Ichi gets underway

Written by Nippon Sekai

The Hagoita-Ichi (羽子板市), or Battledore Fair is an annual event held from December 17 through the 19th at the Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa.

The fair dates back to the Edo Period, and attracts around 300,000 people to the open-air stalls selling hagoita (battledores), kites and other New Year decorations.

Hagoita are rectangular boards with a handle used for playing a New Year game called hanetsuki, a sort of badmington style of game. The hagoita sold at Hagoita-ichi are not for playing with though.  They are ornamental good-luck charms elaborately decorated with pictures and accessories. The front of the hagoita has images of Kabuki actors, TV personalities, pop stars, athletes, and anime characters.

Like the Tori-no-Ichi held at shrines in November, the sellers and buyers clap their hands rhythmically in harmony when a battledore is sold making for a fun and festive environment.
