Three Nara mascot rivals created to commemorate the 1,300th anniversary of the Nara-Heijokyo capital (the anniversary of Japan's ancient capital being relocated to Nara) in 2010, met together for the first time in a promotional event in Sakurai City, Nara Prefecture.
Nara's official mascot, Sento-kun, appeared with two other unofficial mascots created by different organizations who felt that Sento-kun was not cute enough. Buddhists monks created their own yuru-kyara named Namu-kun, which is modeled after Prince Shotoku while a Nara citizens group came up with Manto-kun.
While the Namu-kun and Manto-kun camps still maintain their mascots will be rivals to Sento-kun and each other, the three mascots kept things civil and did not beat each others brains out on stage. They instead danced and posed together in a show of peace and friendship. Organizers for the 1,300th anniversary are still hoping the three mascots can promote the event together.
