Dogo Onsen (道後温泉) in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture, and one of Japan's oldest and most famous hot spring, underwent their annual すす払い (susuharai) starting bright and early at 7am on the 16th.
The present main building was built in 1894 and is designated an important cultural property. Each year, more than 700,000 visitors bathe at the hot spring.
For one day, the onsen is closed to perform the ritual "housecleaning." Personnel from Matsuyama City and the local hotel association dusted, swept, wiped, and vacuumed the facility. Long bamboo poles were used to dust the exterior of the building.
Bathing at Dogo Onsen can be enjoyed throughout the year from 6:00am until 11:00pm.
